In 1986, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was established under the Ministry of Textiles of the Government of India.

Every year, NIFT conducts NIFT entrance exams to shortlist candidates who are interested in getting admissions to a wide range of the National Institute of Fashion Technology to different graduate as well as post-graduate degree programs in different disciplines of fashion. NIFT selects students in courses such as the Bachelor of Design (BDes), Master of Fashion Management (MFM), Master of Design (MDes), Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech), and Master of Fashion Technology (MFTech) on the basis of NIFT entrance exams.
A three-tier pattern of NIFT entrance exams is followed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology for the BDes and MDes course admissions. All interested candidates are required to appear for the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and the General Ability Test (GAT) as part of their NIFT entrance exam. For the final admission round, there is a Situation Test. Students are required to clear the group discussion, and personal interview rounds for the MDes course. On the other hand, candidates who are appearing for the MFTech and MFM courses must clear CAT, group discussion, and personal interview. GAT is the only criteria of selection for the BFTech course.

What is NIFT?
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was established in 1986 in New Delhi by the Indian Ministry of Textiles. What is the medium of instruction for teaching and exams at NIFT?
The only medium of instructions at the NIFT campuses is English. The language for GAT, CAT, Situation Test, Group discussion, and Personal interview is also English.

Please note that the above fee structure for different NIFT courses is only for the academic year 2024-2025. The fee for Indian students gets increased by 10 per cent every year while the fees for NRI students get increased by 5 per cent every year.

What is the pattern for the 2024 NIFT Situation Test?
The shortlisted candidates for the NIFT B. Des. course after the written entrance examination (GAT and CAT papers) are required to undergo Nift Situation Test in April 2019. Candidates preparing for the situation test should ideally take the assistance of NIFT entrance exam sample papers. The National Institute of Fashion Technology will not conduct any interviews of candidates applying for admission to the BDes or BFTech program in 2024. However, it will be conducting a personal interview for admission to MDes, MFTech and MFM programs in 2024.
Does NIFT offers residential facility?
NIFT provides residential accommodation for girls on most campuses. The hostels of NIFT operate on a no-profit and no-loss basis. All the hostel premises provide round-the-clock security, doctor-on-call, indoor and outdoor games, and television.
NIFT campuses that have accommodation for girls only: Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Patna, and Shillong.
NIFT campuses that have accommodation for both boys and girls: Chennai, Jodhpur, Mumbai, and Rae Bareilly. There is no residential facility on campus at New Delhi.
What is the reservation of seats available?
In accordance with rules of Government of India, citizens get reservation of seats on the basis of following categories:
- General seats reservation is 50.5%.
- SC seat reservation is 15%.
- OBC-NC seat reservation is 27%.
- ST seat reservation is 7.5%.
