Navigating the NATA: Understanding the Computer-Based Adaptive Test and Evaluation

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) is a crucial gateway for aspiring architects in India. In this year, NATA has transitioned to a Computer-Based Adaptive Test (CBAT) format, bringing about significant changes in the examination process. Understanding this format is paramount for success. What is the NATA Computer-Based Adaptive Test (CBAT)?

Unlike traditional linear tests where all candidates answer the same set of questions, the NATA CBAT adapts to each individual’s performance. This means:

• Adaptive Difficulty: The difficulty level of subsequent questions is determined by your performance on previous ones. If you answer correctly, the next question will likely be more challenging. Conversely, incorrect answers lead to easier questions.The questions will be randomly selected from the existing question bank.
• Personalized Testing Experience:By tracking the correctness of responses, the system will dynamically tailor the difficulty of questions presented to the user
• A weighted score will be generated, taking into account both the difficulty level of questions the student attempted and the maximum possible difficulty of the examination.

Understanding the Evaluation Process:

The adaptive nature of the test impacts the evaluation process. Here’s what you need to know:

Part A:

For Part A, containing questions A1, A2, and A3, evaluation will proceed as follows:

• A1 and A2 answer sheets will be assessed by a panel of two evaluators, and their scores will be averaged.
• A3 answer sheets will be evaluated by a separate panel of two evaluators, and their scores will be averaged.
• If the difference between the two evaluators’ scores exceeds the council’s specified margins, the answer sheet will be subjected to online moderation.
• Moderation will be conducted by council-appointed moderators, using predefined criteria.
• The moderator’s score will be the final score for that answer sheet.

Part B

The scores for Part-B will be generated online by the system. For Part-A, the marks entered by evaluators/moderators in the system will be used to generate scores. The final result with consolidated scores will be generated based on the moderation process, if any.

Candidates opting to appear in multiple tests will receive separate scorecards for each attempt. The scorecard will include the marks secured in previous attempts, if any. Candidates can take the NATA Test up to three times in one academic session. The best score among all attempts will be considered the valid score. The NATA Test score is valid for two academic sessions.

. A1 – Composition and Color (25 Marks): Develop appropriate compositions for given scenarios, utilizing effective color application and visually appealing shape arrangements.

• A2 – Sketching & Composition (Black and White) (25 Marks): Demonstrate the ability to draw and visualize situations involving buildings, people, environments, and products, with a focus on scale, proportion, texture, and shading.
• A3 – 3D Composition (30 Marks): Construct creative 3D compositions using provided materials, responding to specific situational prompts.

PART-B: Part B shall have two types of Questions viz.,

B1 – 42 Questions (Multiple Choice QuestionsMCQ)

B2 – 08 Questions (No Choice Questions – NCQ) from the following topics:

Visual Reasoning: Ability to comprehend and reconstruct 2D/3D compositions, including understanding their structure and technical principles.

• Logical Derivation: Ability to analyze situations, compositions, and contexts to extract meaning, identify subtle details, and draw logical conclusions.
• General Knowledge (Architecture & Design): Awareness of architectural and design trends, current events, and historical developments, including significant buildings and material/construction innovations.
• Language Interpretation: Ability to accurately interpret words and sentences, demonstrating understanding of English grammar.
• Design Sensitivity: Ability to observe, document, and analyze people, spaces, products, and environments, employing critical thinking and identifying nuanced communication.
• Design Thinking: Ability to understand symbolism, metaphors, problem definition, and situational analysis.
• Numerical Ability: Proficiency in basic mathematics and its application to spatial reasoning and geometric problem-solving.

• Practice with Computer-Based Tests: Familiarize yourself with the interface and format of computer-based tests. Practice using online resources and mock tests.
• Focus on Fundamentals: Strengthen your foundational knowledge in drawing, visual reasoning, and logical reasoning.
• Time Management: Practice managing your time effectively. Allocate time for each section and avoid spending too much time on a single question.
• Accuracy Over Speed: Prioritize accuracy over speed. Answer questions carefully and avoid rushing.
• Stay Calm and Confident: The adaptive nature of the test can be challenging, but staying calm and confident is essential.
• Understand the Syllabus: Ensure a full understanding of the NATA syllabus, and practice all aspects of it.
